Choosing earmuffs for the workplace:
Protective, anti-noise earmuffs safeguard the wearer against harmful noise by decreasing the decibel level according to the SNR rating. The maximum noise level for an 8-hour workday is set at 85 dB. If the average noise levels in the environment exceed this threshold, it is essential to select earmuffs with an SNR rating that brings the noise down to 85 dB or lower. For example, working with earmuffs rated at SNR 32 in an environment with noise levels of 116 dB will reduce the noise exposure to 84 dB.
When earmuffs are worn for extended periods, comfort becomes crucial. Look for sufficiently wide sealing pads made from skin-friendly materials that cover the entire ear. A padded headband is also beneficial for alleviating pressure on the top of the head. Additionally, the tightness of the earcups affects both comfort and noise damping effectiveness. Therefore, it is advisable to opt for earmuffs with a balanced SNR rating rather than the highest available.
